When I was interviewed by Kayla Huszar on her Chill Like a Mother Podcast, I knew we connected when she told me she had just read the Sip, Squirrel. In this Sip I share the realities of my easily swayed mind to go from one thing to the next in the blink of an eye.
We all have a version of this and Kayla told me about her ADD mind of getting pulled in many directions.
I believe my book is perfect for that as my clients and readers with similarly wired brains appreciate short chapters and bullet point tools that get to the point at explaining and demonstrating their application.
Kayla is an art therapist and supports her clients and podcast listeners with practical and effective ways to evolve, heal, grow and thrive. When your mind is all over the place I invite you to start small and with what is at your fingertips. Your breath. Even ONE LONG INTENTIONAL breath is supportive and useful. Have you ever caught yourself holding your breath or the opposite, hyperventilating? Starting with your breath slows you down to the moment, tuning into your inhale and exhale can do this. As it s l o w s you down. And gets you to the here and now.
Create a daily ritual that offers elements that you know support, calm, center and represent your values. I value peace and connection so the first thing I do each day before even getting out of bed is sit up and plug in. I plug into my breath, self-love and connection. I quiet my mind with breathing and counting then I move into my meditation practice of choice, ending with sending out love, light and blessing to those who come to my mind that morning. Mantra, reiki and mindfulness all support me, providing the fuel I need. No morning practice of mine ever looks exactly the same but each morning holds elements of honoring what gives me life. After years of showing up there are shared similarities as I always breathe, reflect, give thanks, visualize and get still and quiet. The amount of time doesn’t matter. It is the showing up that is vital. If you have an overly active, stimulated, busy mind you too can show up to yourself for one breath. That one breath turns into two and those two breaths leave you more present and focused than before you showed up to yourself.
Be gentle with yourself as you practice trying out different rituals that support, guide and give you what you are looking for–for me it was peace. And it still is peace. Peace alongside the chaos of raising a family. Peace amidst the noise of the world. Peace simultaneously with the monkey mind wanting my attention, begging for me to be distracted.
Start with a simple intention of showing up to yourself first thing each morning for thirty seconds. When the squirrel tries to lure you away with a bowl of nuts, come back to your intention. You don’t have to get it perfectly. Only show up.
Once this practice turns into a habit, apply it to your day. Stopping to plug in before driving carpool, picking up the phone, entering an appointment, making dinner. Stop and plug in to your breath, this gets you present, as this brings the squirrel out of the tree, back down to the ground.
Cheers, Jenny
