When I created the Anchored Deck, the idea was inspired by my then eight-year-old son. He didn’t want to go to school, every day was met with tears, worrying, an abundance of stress that no one that age should have to experience. We had tried everything and all sorts of doctors and therapists, and the highly anxious parts of himself couldn’t find his center.  Spinning. Tipped off his axis, daily. Constantly under the pull of worry. Until we tried a word. One Anchor word. 

A miracle was born.

In case you aren’t familiar, miracles happen every day. To quote the famous Albert Einstein, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle; the other is as though everything is a miracle.”

I invite my life coaching clients to be miracle minded, which means to notice, expect, watch and witness. I am not talking Jesus walking on water miracles here, I am talking the everyday, but still wildly miraculous kind of miracles. You run into someone you haven’t seen in years and you were thinking of them the other day or ten minutes ago. You are running late, and you get a parking spot right in front of where you need to be, arriving just in time. The sun rising, a bird taking flight, a flower in bloom when only days earlier it was hidden in the earth, a rainbow, the sun setting, a friend calling, an offer of help, a hug when feeling lonely–all miracles that we either miss or get to observe with our own eyes and take in with our body, mind and spirit.

I needed a miracle when our son was eight. I listened to my gut and shared the practice I use after my morning meditation. 

• I get still, quiet and grounded. I put one hand on my heart and another on my gut as I ask the question, “What do I need today?” 
• In my stillness, and quieted mind I allow a word, usually the first one to surface. Peace. Joy. Patience. Trust. These are the types of words that percolate within and arise. 
• I pick one and choose it to anchor me throughout my day. If I am frustrated, anxious, overwhelmed or tired, I stop. I remember my anchor word as I take a few deep breaths. 
• Doing this, I find my center and get present. 
• Frustration, anxiety, overwhelm and exhaustion are no longer what I am tethered to and am anchored to peace, my word for that particular day.

Besides helping me, this practice worked wonders as well for our son. Here was a typical morning after tears and not wanting to go to school, applying the practice as we were walking to the bus stop.

• “What do you need today, honey, I would ask, or how do you want to feel? 
• Gratitude and strength, mama. Those two anchors were his top contenders. 
• Then at the end of the day, tucking him into bed at night, I would ask him how strength helped him. On the playground when no one wanted to play with me he told me, and when the teacher was frustrated with me for not understanding the assignment I remembered you and dad and how much I love you and you love me.

I write about this Anchoring practice in my book, share it with my clients and offer it to you. 

Clients tell me, over and over, how the word they picked was just for them, perfect, spot on and aligned with what they needed to hear. Funny, they say. Divine, I believe.

Where in your life do you need a miracle? I know the U.S. could use one now. Maybe the shit storm that is happening in your life or in the world are miracles in disguise. Things have got to get bad perhaps before we can be flooded by the light. Are we willing to see past the ugly and look for the signs? Can we notice the possibility? They say, we can’t see the light until it is dark.

It felt really dark when our son was eight and I listened to the nudge and tried offering Anchor words. I recorded the words both he and I used the most over a three-year period, tossed in some good heavy hitters, some top ten words and created my seventy-word Anchored Deck. 

The sales pitch I want to offer is, get miracle minded. • Get out of your own way. 
• Count your blessings. 
• Appreciate. 
• Choose wisely. 
• Co-create miracles by stepping into childlike wonder, anchored to what matters most to your heart and step aside to witness, engage and remember that anything can happen, so why not tether to a life-giving anchor over a cup depleting one?

Our son is no longer a little kid, he turns 21 this summer and currently his anchor is reminding himself “everything works out.” Another anchor that always offers support is exercise, if he’s not teaching himself a new sport, these days golf, going for a run, playing a soccer game with his college team, shooting hoops with new friends he is moving his body, sweating it out.
